Most renovation and M&E contractors get a steady stream of offers to "list your company" somewhere: business directories, renovation portals, lead platforms that sell enquiries, and the free listings on Google, Apple Maps and Bing. Some of these bring real jobs. Others just collect your details and a fee.
The question owners ask us is simple: should I spend my time and money on directories, or on my own website? The honest answer is that they do different jobs, and they work best together, set up in the right order. This guide explains how.
A directory listing puts your name in front of people who are browsing a category, such as "renovation contractors" or "MEP companies". In Singapore that often means home-renovation portals where homeowners browse designers and contractors side by side. In the Gulf, general business directories and trade listings play a similar role. A listing can bring enquiries from people who have never heard of you.
The trade-off is control. The platform decides the layout, which competitors appear next to you, how reviews are shown, and sometimes who gets the lead first. When you stop paying, the listing can disappear or be downgraded.
Few clients hire a contractor straight from a directory card. They click through to look for proof: real project photos, the services you actually do, your licences, and a quick way to ask for a quote. If the click lands on a Facebook page or no website at all, a careful homeowner or a facilities manager moves on to the next name.
Your website is the one place where you control the whole story, it keeps working when you stop paying a platform, and every directory listing can point to it.
For local searches, Google itself explains what matters. Its help page on improving your local ranking names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence is based partly on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.
That is where good directories earn their place. A listing on a respected local or trade directory that links to your website is one of those signals. A hundred listings on spammy sites nobody visits are not, and some can do more harm than good if they publish wrong phone numbers or old addresses.
Use exactly the same company name, phone number and address on your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory. If you moved office or changed numbers, update the old listings first. Mismatched details confuse customers and make it harder for search engines to be sure all those listings are the same business.
Of all the free listings, your Google Business Profile matters most, because it appears in the map results for searches like "renovation contractor near me". A few rules from Google's Business Profile guidelines trip up contractors often:
Point the profile's website link to your home page, or to a specific service page if you only do one trade. When someone taps it, they should land on a page that matches what they searched for.
A visitor from a directory has already seen your competitors on the same page. They are comparing, so your website needs to answer their questions fast:
Look at your directory profile and your website side by side. If the photos, services or phone numbers do not match, fix that before you spend anything on more listings.
None of these mean a platform is a scam, but each is a reason to test carefully before you commit to a yearly contract.
For a while, maybe. But you do not control the page, your competitors sit next to you, and the listing can vanish when you stop paying. A website is the asset you keep, and it makes every listing work harder.
Quality beats quantity. Google Business Profile, Apple and Bing, plus two or three directories your clients really use, is a solid base. Add more only when you can track what they bring.
If the directory category matches one service, such as "glass and aluminium" or "electrical", link to that service page. If it is a general listing, link to the home page.
